Research Roundup:

July 2018

.

Welcome Message

We want to share with you some good news for Respirology – the 2017 impact factors have been announced and Respirology’s impact factor has increased to 4.4 (from 3.25 in 2016). The journal’s ranking among the Respiratory System journals has also increased to 10/59(from 18/59 in 2016). The Research Roundup has been featuring the Respirology Editors Choice for one year now. We would like to Congratulate the team and thank past editor Peter Eastwood and current editors Phil Bardin and Paul Reynolds on this impressive growth in citations. We look forward to your future publications!

Now to awards – a number of grants-in-aid and travel awards are closing soon. The Lung Foundation Australia have also just opened up two new memorial awards for Interstitial Lung Disease. Please look to the open awards below so that you do not miss out.

We would like to highlight the next endeavour from Bill van Nierop who is launching his second Lung campaign – Long Kayak for Lungs. This campaign aims to raise awareness and understanding of lung diseases within the community, remove the stigma often linked to those with a lung disease, help change community attitudes to this insidious disease group and raise some much needed funds on route. Bill attended our TSANZSRS18 to present a PhD scholarship which is supported through funds he raised in his last campaign. See the story of Bill’s next adventure below.

Enjoy the July edition of your research roundup.

Long Kayak for Lungs

Following on from the successful Long walk for Lungs last year , Bill Van Nierop has raised the bar in his ongoing endeavours  in supporting  Lung Foundation Australia with their  efforts in research and patient support with a remarkable new challenge for 2018, The Long Kayak for Lungs, 42 Days/2,200 Km’s Albury NSW to the Murray Mouth in South Aust.

This 2,200 km initiative is all about furthering the awareness and understanding of lung diseases within the community, remove the stigma often linked to those with a lung disease, help change community attitudes to this insidious disease group and raise some much needed funds on route.

Funds raised via the Long Walk for Lungs were used to initiate a PHD Scholarship in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Research, support for Lung Foundation Patient Support groups, and contribute to the funding for a future respiratory nurse to support patients across Australia.

Bill is determined to paddle the distance and raise vital research funding to support Australians living with lung diseases like IPF.

Bill lives in Brisbane, working for AGnVET Services. Bill is married to Lesley with 3 children and 5 grand kids, who Bill would like to be around to see grow up.

Support Bill’s efforts at www.longkayakforlungs.com.au and follow his journey.

Lung Foundation Cycle Challenge

The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) is raising much needed funds for Lung Foundation Australia by participating in The Corporate Cycle Challenge 2018. On Friday 3rd August, TSANZ Staff will participate in this challenge to support the work of the Lung Foundation Australia.

TSANZ is the only health peak body representing a range of professions (medical specialists, scientists, researchers, academics, nurses, physiotherapists, students and others) across various disciplines within the respiratory/sleep medicine field in Australia and New Zealand.

TSANZ is committed to serving the professional needs of its members by improving knowledge and understanding of lung disease, with the ultimate goals being to prevent respiratory illness through research and health promotion and to improve health care for people with respiratory illness.

You can help, too! Please CLICK HERE to donate or if you are interested in joining the challenge.

Any amount you can give makes a difference. Thank you for your generosity and support!

Research Project and Survey Requests

The Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) Survey

The Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) has developed all ages, multi-ethnic reference equations for the most commonly used lung function tests and worked with the broader respiratory community to implement these equations.

As part of our broader work we are interested in receiving feedback from the community regarding experiences with implementation of the GLI spirometry and GLI TLCO reference equations, as well understanding any barriers and challenges to implementation. We would greatly appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey to help us understand the experiences of your own research group and/or clinical department.

This short survey should take ~ 5 minutes to complete and will assist in further informing GLI activities and how we approach future implementation. Individuals and their institutions will not be identified. Outcomes of the survey will be made publicly available on the GLI website.

We are currently working to develop reference equations for lung volumes and if you or your colleagues have lung volume data in healthy individuals please do visit www.lungfunction.org for more information on this latest GLI initiative.

ANZ health professionals who care for people with lung cancer are invited to take part in a survey about the clinical importance and management of cough.

Cough in lung cancer – a health professional survey

The survey link is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/cough_in_lung_cancer

Survey results will be used to establish the need and direction for development of further pharmacological and non-pharmacological management strategies for cough in lung cancer.

We are interested in the views of health professionals from the full range of disciplines, specialties and settings involved in caring for people with lung cancer, regardless of their level of experience in managing cough.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and anonymous, and will take approximately 10-15 minutes.

This project is being conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in collaboration with colleagues at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU).

For more information, please contact Dr Tim Luckett via tim.luckett@uts.edu.au or 02 9514 4861.
